As ações preferenciais (PN) são aquelas que dão a preferência na distribuição de dividendos aos seus acionistas. Elas são caracterizadas no código da empresa por conter o número 4 após a sigla, como PETR4, que é a Ação Preferencial Nominativa da Petrobras. Além disso, essas ações têm a característica da exigibilidade, na qual a empresa pode, a qualquer momento comprar novamente a ação do acionista.
Em conjunto com as ações ordinárias (ON), as ações preferenciais compõem os tipos de ações mais comuns na bolsa. Enquanto as ações PN são identificadas pelo dígito 4, as ações ON são diferenciadas pelo dígito 3. No caso de Petrobras, a ação ON da empresa é a PETR3.
