As ações preferenciais (PN) são aquelas que dão a preferência na distribuição de dividendos aos seus acionistas. Elas são caracterizadas no código da empresa por conter o número 4 após a sigla, como PETR4, que é a Ação Preferencial Nominativa da Petrobras. Além disso, essas ações têm a característica da exigibilidade, na qual a empresa pode, a qualquer momento comprar novamente a ação do acionista.
Em conjunto com as ações ordinárias (ON), as ações preferenciais compõem os tipos de ações mais comuns na bolsa. Enquanto as ações PN são identificadas pelo dígito 4, as ações ON são diferenciadas pelo dígito 3. No caso de Petrobras, a ação ON da empresa é a PETR3.
Não é uma regra, mas, geralmente, as ações preferenciais têm maior liquidez em relação às ordinárias. No caso da Petrobras, que usamos de exemplo, os dois tipos de ação são encontrados com facilidade na bolsa sendo negociados em grandes volumes.
A liquidez é importante porque indica a velocidade na qual você consegue transformar o seu investimento em dinheiro, de fato. Na prática, ela mostra o volume de ações negociado diariamente — quanto maior esse número, maior a liquidez.
Ela pode ter um grande peso na hora de optar por um papel ou outro. Via de regra, quanto maior a liquidez, melhor para os investidores, porque menores são os riscos de que eles não consigam vender o papel em caso de necessidade.
